Upon receiving the prize, McDowell said he tried to write Waiata that represented what it means to be urban Maori.
“Whanau, when I write songs, I want to write music that, if someone in the world knew, I would know that it could only come from a place in the world and that is Aotearoa.
“I’m thinking of urban marae … When I’m writing music, I’m really imitating the voices of the Kuia who drive those Marae and gave me a space to learn my craft. I’ve been getting their sound for years, doesn’t mean they get royalties, I just paid with Aroha.”
