Mohamed Salah can make Liverpool history with new contract but there is one record he will never break

Mohamed Salah may never become Liverpool’s all-time appearance holder, but a place in the club’s record books still beckons.

talkSPORT understands the Reds are confident of reaching an agreement to extend the Egyptian’s stay at Anfield, with plans to tie him down on a new three-year deal.

This comes after ongoing speculation surrounding Salah’s future on Merseyside, with Saudi Arabia previously touted as his next move.

But with the 32-year-old now odds-on to remain Liverpool’s main man, he can continue to build on his hugely impressive legacy.

Salah has enjoyed a standout campaign with the Reds, who are in pole position to lift the Premier League title, topping the league charts for goals and assists this term.

Having notched 27 goals and 17 assists already, he is on course for his best ever campaign in the English top-flight.

And the prospect of three more years to continue his prolific form will surely prompt Salah to target even further history, with all-time leading goalscorer Ian Rush’s 346-goal record in sight.

As the Egypt star prepares to cement his legend status at Anfield, we’ve taken a look at the records he could break, and one which may be out of reach, should he put pen to paper on a new contract.

Liverpool’s all-time record goalscorer

Since joining from Roma in 2017, Salah has been Liverpool’s main source of goals, and his total now stands at 243 in all competitions.

This tally places him third in the Reds’ all-time goalscoring charts, with Roger Hunt sitting in second place, having struck on 285 occasions for the club in the 1950s and 1960s.

Salah still trails Rush’s record by some distance, sitting 103 goals shy of the two-time European Cup winner.

Having surpassed the 20-goal mark in each of his eight seasons at Anfield, the Premier League star would have to up his average to over 30 goals per campaign in the next three years, as well as adding to his tally this term.

Despite the tall order however, Ray Parlour has tipped Salah to become an all-time great for the Reds by overtaking Rush’s tally.

Reacting to news of a potential new contract, he told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I really hope he stays, because he can set a legacy.

“He can be up there with Kenny Dalglish, people like that, I’m sure. Because he could beat Ian Rush’s record goals. So he deserves it.”

Parlour continued: “In this day and age, look at Ronaldo, he’s still playing. How old is he now? 40.

“So he [Salah] can play on to 37, 38 if he wanted to, I should imagine.

“We don’t know what sort of level, but I’m sure the next couple of years he’d be no problem playing on and and scoring goals.”

Another piece of history which could drive Salah over the next three years is Alan Shearer’s long-standing Premier League goal record.

The Newcastle legend’s 260-goal tally has been untouched since his retirement in 2006, and the Egyptian King is currently 76 goals out, sitting fifth in the top-flight’s all-time charts with 184 strikes.

Salah is unlikely to face much competition in his pursuit of Shearer however, with Harry Kane the only other star in the top five still currently playing.

The England captain’s tally of 213 goals from his time at Tottenham puts him second on the list.

But having left Spurs for Bayern Munich in 2023, it remains to be seen whether he will return to England to rival Salah here.

The Reds talisman would have to net well over 20 league goals in each of the next three seasons to be in with a chance of catching Shearer.

For all his goalscoring feats, a three-year contract extension will do Salah no favours when it comes to making a dent in Liverpool’s all-time appearance charts.

While his 392 total games for the Reds have included lifting the Premier League and Champions League titles, this doesn’t even place him in the top 25 of the Reds’ most capped players.

This category belongs to club legend Ian Callaghan, who turned out a record 857 times for the club between 1960 and 1978.

Just behind the two-time European Cup winner at the top of this leaderboard are homegrown greats Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard, with an impressive 737 and 710 games respectively.
