The star of Matildas, Steph Cathery, says he hopes that Football Australia will find a permanent “sooner rather than later” coach, admitting that the players are “in Limbo”.
The Matildas have been without a full -time coach for eight months since the official departure of Tony Gustavsson on August 1 after the Paris Olympic Games.
In his eleventh game with the caretaker Tom Sermanni, Australia defeated South Korea 2-0 at the McDonald Jones de Newcastle stadium to claim his first consecutive victories of the year.
The friendlies of South Korea are expected to be the last bass Sermanni, with FA having marked a coach will be in force in the middle of the year and their friendlies in May/June against Argentina in Melbourne and Canberra.
Sermanni himself is not sure if this will be the case, with the pressure of the FA given the track in constant change of the imminent Asian Cup 2026 that will be organized by Australia.
Expressing relief when claiming a clean sweep of his two -game series with South Korea, Calley admits that reconstruction has been difficult without a permanent coach.
“We are in the early stages of a reconstruction and that happens in each cycle when you are leading to important tournaments and we have a year to build, well, less than a year, but that’s what Cathery said.
“It’s hard as a game group when you’re in Limbo a little.
“You don’t have a clear address in how we are going to play moving forward.
“Tommy has done a great job upon entering. He creates an incredible culture for girls, a really positive energy.
“You can’t blame it and how it has done it, but it is difficult when you try to build towards something specific and have spent a time since we have had it.
“The girls have been doing their best and we have stayed together and galvanizing as a group.
“That will be important for us in the future.”
Lyon’s coach Joe Montemurro had emerged as a front corridor for Matildas vacancy.
Cathery is well known to the Australian coach decorated, after having played under him in Melbourne City before following him to the current Arsenal Club team.
The star defender played a direct bat when asked about his former boss.
“I have no idea. I have no idea if that is the chat or whatever,” said Cathery, whose Arsenal team plays Lyon in the semifinals of the women’s champions League at the end of this month.
“He is obviously on paper right now, so I really don’t know how it works.
“He is a great coach. I have had it a couple of times and he is doing it well there in Lyon (but) I will not choose the coach. It is simply not my role.
“We will wait and see and hope it will be done sooner rather than later.”
