The east coast marked three attempts for two in a “first typical game” in Eketahuna.
The coasts led 13-10 in the break and increased their advantage to 20 to 10 only to the home team to score “with about 10 to play and make it a little interesting,” said visiting coach Guy Williams.
“We played with our plan and kept it tighter, but as soon as we loosened, we touched the hands of Eke and his Fijians, and some of them are very good.”
Just getting a team on the field was a hit for Ekethahuna, who had fought for numbers in preparation.
“We had 16 Fijians appearing on Thursday night, so there was a lack of structure, but we led and we are happy. It was a game that anyone could have won,” said Eketahuna coach Anthony Rowdy.
Greytown 53 Masterton Red Star 12
Greytown coach Peter Russell was pleased with his convincing victory over a Combative Masterton Red Star Rams in Greytown.
“We went out a lot, and it was really a funny game,” said Russell.
“We dominated in some large spots, but we didn’t put the points on the board, which was frustrating.”
Chris Dixon’s loose trio, Setty Sammons and Rongo Huiriana, the second five Hayden Schrijvers and the Kallum Pike wing in their first -rate debut stood out for Russell.
