A serial criminal who killed a stranger after being denied a cigarette was jailed for at least 16 years after being prosecuted under special Double Doupardy laws.
Steven Greig, 47, left the taxi driver Mark Ward severely disabled and needed 24-hour care after a brutal assault in Dundee in April 2022.
Greig was under the influence of drugs when he pushed Mr Ward into a grassy embankment, causing the victim to hit his head off the road.
While lying defenseless on the ground, Greig kicked his harassed victim repeatedly.
A judge told a court that Greig left “without stopping or showing any concern” and leaving Mr Ward “to his fate”.
Lady Drummond said: “It was a senseless, violent, unproven attack on Mr Ward, who was a stranger to you.”
Mr. Ward sustained catastrophic brain injuries and later needed life -saving surgery.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said that Mr. Ward then relied on the fiery nursing care and was unable to speak or digest food properly because of the severity of his disabilities.
In January 2023, Greig was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of assault on serious injuries, permanent disability, permanent ominous and danger of life.
Three months later and a year later of the initial attack, Mr. However, Ward dead at the age of 55 at Ninewells Hospital.
After a post -mortem investigation a direct link between the assault and the death of Mr. Ward found, Crown advocate ordered Greig to be charged for murder under the Double Jeopardy (Scotland) 2011 Act.
Greig acknowledged a culpable homicide, but executed for murder and was convicted in January at the Dundee High Court.
He returned to the dock in the Supreme Court in Edinburgh Thursday, where he imposed a compulsory life sentence with at least 16 years behind bars.
Lady Drummond has a statement from the victim of the Mr. Ward’s sister and brother -in -law admit.
The judge said: “They describe him as a beloved, very intelligent, social and family man. He has been employed for the past 20 years and a taxi driver.
“The impact of the serious injuries you sustained made him fully dependent on others.
“Those injuries and his subsequent death had a devastating impact on his parents, sisters, sisters -in -law, cousins and wider family. They were left in shock, continued distress and with deep loss.”

Lady Drummond highlighted Greig’s “unfavorable children’s conditions” and noted that the two of two drugs had abused from a young age.
But the judge said that Greig was on five bail orders at the time of the offense, adding: ‘You have a long criminal record from 1993 to 2022.
“Your record of offense began when you were 13, and came before the courts at 16 years and continued for 34 years.”
Despite being offered “many waste of the community”, the judge said Greig was constantly “failing to go on and make long -term change”.
Lady Drummond also acknowledged the report on criminal and social work, in which the author described Greig as “no meaningful remorse” for his actions.
Moira Orr, which leads to manslaughter and major crime for COPFS, said: “This is a rare situation where someone has been convicted of a crime before and has been prosecuted under the same circumstances, but for another crime.
“As prosecutors, we have worked hard to deliver justice to Mark Ward and his family in what was especially traumatic conditions for them since the assault in April 2022. Our thoughts remain with them at this time.
“The terrible actions of Steven Greig robbed a beloved family man of his life after a shocking attack. He will now serve a long imprisonment for his crime.”
