He was Abdul Nabizadah, 63 years old.
A man was found severely injured on a trail at the Camperdown and Totora RDS intersection around 2:20 am on Monday.
He died at Wellington Hospital on Tuesday morning.
It was the second serious incident after theft of a Darlington RD address 20 minutes earlier, in which two adults found a stranger at their home.
After being confronted and fighting one of the residents, the intruder fled.
A post mortem investigation found that the cause of Nabizadah’s death was the result of injuries to the head of the force.
Detective Nick Pritchard inspector said Nabizadah was not involved in the theft, and police were still trying to establish how he was injured.
Pritchard said he was originally from Afghanistan and his body was released to his family on Thursday.
Nabizadah was placed to rest on Thursday afternoon.
Wellington’s Afghan community president, says Hakimyar, told RNZ that it had been really difficult.
“I can still say that members of our community are really, really is not good because we understand how important it was for all of us.”
Hakimyar said it was difficult for his family, and his younger brother came from Australia in shock.
He said the community visited the man this week and his family to support them.
“We all gathered to stay and support your family and each other, because we all knew him.”
Motukairangi/Eastern advisor, Teri O’Neill, said that tragedies like this left ripples through families, neighborhoods and city as a whole.
“My Aroha goes to your loved ones, neighbors and the widest Afghan community you are feeling this loss deeply.
“We owe Abdul and all our communities to continue working towards a Wellington, where security, dignity and belonging are real for everyone.”
Meanwhile, she said there would be a community meeting on Tuesday to discuss security issues.
Rongotai deputy Julie Anne Gent shared her condolences with man of man and friends.
“It’s absolutely tragic and devastating when something like this happens, understandably the people who live locally were shocked and very concerned about this turnaround.”
Gunter said he supported plans to organize a community event next week.
“I think it’s the right thing for people to do is to come together and talk about what happened and what can be done to improve security.”
She expected to attend the meeting.
Pritchard said police were looking for panel camera filming in the morning suburb, Nabizadah suffered the injuries.
“We would like to hear from any driver who was driving in the suburb of Miramar between midfielder and 3 am on Monday, March 17, and has images of his trip.
“We would like to hear from anyone on Nevay Road, Camperdown and Darlington Road road between 12:20 pm and 3am the same morning.
“Nabizadah wore a brown jacket with a blue t -shirt, black pants and light brown shoes. He was located near his vehicle, a silver -colored Toyota, with NQE681 record.”
He said that if a public member saw a person fitting this description at the moment they should contact the police.
Pritchard said police were reviewing CCTV and continued continuous consultations about the victim’s movements, including establishing if his death and theft were linked.
Theft consultations were underway.
“We also want to hear from those who locate discarded property items in their sections, and who has seen, but has not reported suspicious activities or prowling in the area in the last two weeks, including any previously reported robberies of properties or vehicles since the beginning of March.”
