A man was arrested on the suspicion of murder after a four -year -old girl and two adults died in a fire that ripped through a historic former station house in a village of Northamptonshire.
The man was arrested after the girl, the 30-year-old woman and the 23-year-old man died on the property in Rushton on Friday night, police in Northamptonshire said in an update released on Sunday.
Police, fire departments and ambulance services were called around 10:30 pm for reports of a major fire at the address in Beswick near Kettering.
One person was later taken to the hospital by the East Midlands Ambulance Service and three officers were assessed for smoke inhalation.
The 54-year-old man, from Kettering, was arrested on Saturday and remains in police custody.
The relatives of the victims were notified and supported by specially trained officers.
Police in Northamptonshire and the fire and rescue service in Northamptonshire are still calling on information while investigating the cause of the fire.
In a statement issued at the scene of the deadly blaze on Sunday afternoon, Chief Inspector Paul Cash said: ‘We know that this incident has caused significant distress locally and that our officers will remain in the area to reassure and help where we can.
“With regard to this investigation, one arrest was made, and we will provide updates on this as soon as possible.
“This investigation is well underway, but remains in the early stage, and it will take time to fully determine what happened.”
Senior investigating officer -detective chief inspector Ruby Burrow, of East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: “It is a heartbreaking situation and my mind, and those of all involved in this fire are with the people who died and those who love them.
‘An incredibly thorough and complicated investigation is underway with our partners in Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service to make sure we get the answers that loved ones need and earn.
“Due to the intensity of the fire, we manage a very challenging and dangerous scene, and work with partners to safely and respect the deceased to enable formal identification.”
Specialists of fire investigators and investigation dogs were deployed to support the investigation into the cause of the flames.
Images of the site show a large hole burning through the roof of the building, which is a former 19th century station master at the now closed Glendon and Rushton Railway Station. According to the Historic England website, it is a building with a grade II-listed and is now becoming a residential property.
