Luigi Mangione: US prosecutors directed to seek death penalty for man accused of killing healthcare boss | US News

Prosecutors are requested to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting the CEO of a large company in New York in December.

In February, Glutton plead Not guilty to various charges of murder after the murder of 50-year-old Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan Hotel.

Mr Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

Now, US Attorney General Pam Bondi has issued a statement stating that she “instructed federal prosecutors to ask for the death penalty in this case”.

She added that the murder of Mr. Thomson, an ‘innocent man and father of two young children’, was a ‘premeditated, cold -blooded assassination that shocked America’.

Ms Bondi said her intervention is part of President Trump’s “agenda to stop violent crime and make America safe again”.

She said that because the shooting took place in a public place with ‘bystanders in the area’, there could have been a ‘serious risk of death for additional persons’.

The US Department of Justice said Ms Bondi’s actions were in line with her “Day One Memo as Attorney General” entitled “the revival of the federal death penalty and the moratorium on federal executions”.
