Bruce Ward, Little Rock, Arkansas, is a convicted murderer who is the longest-serving prisoner on Arkansas death row, has passed away. Ward is 68 years old.

Ward was pronounced dead Tuesday for natural reasons, the state Department of Corrections said. He was held in the Varner Supermax unit in Gould, 67 miles (108 kilometers) south of Little Rock.
Ward spent 35 years on death row after being convicted of the 1989 killing of Rebecca Doss, who was found strangled in a men’s room at the Little Rock convenience store where she worked. Ward’s death brought 24 death row prisoners to the state.
Ward is one of eight inmates the state plans to last two weeks in 2017 until its supply of lethal injections expires. Ward’s execution and three others were blocked by a court ruling, although the state enforced four other prisoners.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a new law last month that allows the state to use nitrogen for executions. The measure makes Arkansas the fifth state to legalize the method, and supporters say it will allow the state to resume executions.
Currently, the longest dead prisoner in Arkansas is Don Davis, who was sentenced in 1992 for killing a Northwest Arkansas woman after breaking into her home.
