A former Toronto Raptors basketball player said it was difficult to live in Canada in an interview posted online on Wednesday, but said it was a “cool” place to visit.

Thaddeus Young, 36, talks about his experience on The Mud Podcast, hosted by retired NBA stars Zach Randolph and Tony Allen. Young’s time with the Toronto Raptors spanned three seasons from 2022 to 2024.

When asked about his time in the city, Young said: “I won’t lie, it’s a bit tough in Toronto.”

He continued: “It’s cool to visit, stay there for four to five days. It’s cool. But live there?”

He said it was difficult for his family.

“You have to go through customs all the time,” Allen added.

“It’s almost like you’re at a disadvantage,” Young said. “Like, we have to go to the airport every time. You have to go through the airport – the customs part. You mean tell me I’m just paying for the parcel and I’m going to pay you more to get my parcel from you? Come on, man.

Sometimes he has to wait three to four hours on the Canadian border, Young said.

He said: “My wife is like, look, she said, ‘If you come back here, you might be staying here. We might be staying in the crib.’

Randolph said he had similar experiences in Canadian customs, explaining when he was questioned “100 times” in the way a basketball player traveled to Toronto.

Allen calls Canadian cities “cold.” Although he said he likes Toronto nightclubs, he said he couldn’t see himself playing there.

Former Toronto Raptors player Charlie Villanueva, who played for the team for a season in 2005, defended Baha on a sports podcast.

“My time in Toronto was nothing but amazing,” he said. “Scream to the City of Toronto. But I would say it was inconvenient – but man, you made millions of dollars in the NBA.”

He added: “Don’t be a little boogie now. Don’t forget where you are from.”

He said Young’s comment on Toronto was “Hollywood’s Little.”
