A road cone was inexplicably left at the top of a 50 meter tree at Auckland’s Symonds Street Cemetery in the last 6 months.

Auckland Council says it will remove a road cone left on a 50 meter high tree after forgetting for almost six months.
Auckland resident Neil Coutinho shared a video of the mysteriously placed cone in the Symonds Street cemetery at Auckland CBD in August last year.
“There were a lot of articles at the time with Mayor Wayne Brown complaining about overuse of road cones, so I found it funny to see one on a pine tree in the middle of a cemetery.
“This [the video] It was just a joke, it was not a formal complaint, but I thought of marking the mayor and the advice to see what would happen. “
The advice responded to his X post, promising to investigate the question.
But Coutinho told RNZ that he was surprised to see the cone still months later.
“Someone from the advice has arrived, but I think no one has followed and is still up there.
“It’s quite iconic right now, I think it should be there.”
Regional arborists and ecological manager David Stejskal confirmed to RNZ that the council was aware of Cone since Coutinho’s video was published on August 30, 2024.
“The work was postponed due to supervision in our processing systems, which did not bring the issue to the attention of the appropriate team until recently.
“We recognize this delay and are taking measurements to remove the cone.”
He said the cone was in public lands and a two-person climbing team was hired to remove it at an estimated $ 250 cost.
Stejskal previously condemned people stealing cones and placing them in unlikely places, known as “cones”, and said that having to remove them risked the safety of those involved and wasted the money from taxpayers.
Mayor Brown, who said he wanted to suppress the number of road cones on the city’s roads, refused to comment.
