Ottawa – Liberals will be crowned new leaders and prime minister on Sunday, while the country finds itself involved in a trade war with its closest allies and neighbors.

The leadership vote was only a few days after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed it before suspending widespread tariffs on Canadian goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week that the transition to a new leader “should happen soon”, but particularly complex geopolitical moments could make the situation even more difficult.

The Liberty Conference begins at 4 p.m. in downtown Ottawa and new leaders are expected to be announced in the evening.
400,000 liberal members must vote before 3 p.m. Sunday. As of Friday, more than 125,000 liberal members have voted – already defeating the number of votes in the 2013 leadership competition, with Trudeau being elected as leader.
Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien is expected to speak on stage like Trudeau. The party said he will work for him as a liberal leader for more than a decade.
Philippe J. Fournier, creator of the poll aggregator website 338Canada, told National Post that all available metrics suggest that liberal leaders should indeed be Carney’s first vote, adding: “Unless we’re missing something, this is always possible.”
