Ottawa – Liberal MP Chandra Arya said his nomination for the party to run again in Ottawa Horse Riding has been revoked.
The 62-year-old has represented the city’s Nepean seat since 2015.
The decision to remove him was nearly two months after the party also told Arya that it would not accept him as a candidate for the leader.
National campaign director Andrew Bevan told Arya in a letter a few days before an expected election call.
Arya has been nominated, but the letter said the new information obtained by the party’s “Green Light Committee” led to the campaign co-chair recommendation to revoke his “candidate status”.
Bevan does not include any details about the new information.
Arya shared the letter on his Facebook page, saying it was “a lifelong responsibility” to be a member of Congress.
He wrote: “While this news is very disappointing, it has not diminished the profound honor and privilege of becoming a member of its MP for the people of Nepaine and for all Canadians.”
The party also refused to provide any information when it rejected Arya’s campaign to lead the race in January.
The decision has provided Prime Minister Mark Carney with an Ottawa seat, and so far, he has not announced which ride he intends to take part in during the election.
Various liberals suggested that Carney could run in Edmonton where he grew up. In Toronto, liberals tend to do well. Or in Ottawa where he now lives.
Carney is generally expected to visit Rideau Hall on April 28 or May 5 to hold elections on Sunday.
