Three late birds moved Rory McIlroy in the cutting line when Scottie Scheffler tied the track record to take the lead at Texas Children’s Houston.
McIlroy was outside the cut before three consecutive birds of the 16th lifted him to four under-par on a day that was disrupted by thunderstorms.
After a round was interrupted by a two -hour stopping, McIlroy ended with a 66 as game in the second round called for the day when darkness fell.
This leaves him seven strokes of the pace of the world number one Scheffler, who shot an eight-under-Par 62 to lead by one of the Canadian Taylor Pendrith and Colombian Nico Echavarria.
“I made a few wells,” McIlroy said. “That was it. It was nice to see a few holes go in and get ready.
“It was a little dicey at the end.
World Number One Scheffler has produced his best round since returning from a hand injury while cooking at Christmas while preparing to defend his US Masters title.
Scheffler played in front of the worst of the weather in Memorial Park, and opened with two birds and missed just one green in the regulation, while adding six more birds and completing 36 holes without a bogey.
“It was important to me to stay there patiently,” says Scheffler. “It was nice to start well and hold the momentum and keep the card clean.”
Echavarria was nine-under-par for his round when the game finished 17th and faced a slide from the edge of the green on the face to save par, after driving in the water.
The Australian Min Woo Lee and Ryan Gerard were a further back on nine under-par with the work to complete their second rounds.
The English duo Danny Willett and Matt Wallace were one of those left for the completion of the third round Saturday to see if they would play this weekend.
They were in the clubhouse on two-under-par, one shot outside the current cutting line.
