LaSalle police warn of scammers using service’s cloned phone number

LaSalle police warned the public about a national telephone scam, with callers claiming to be from the town’s police station and trying to obtain personal information.

Police officials said the service has recently begun receiving calls about scams from all over Canada.

It involves a person who calls for cloned phone numbers, using the LaSalle department’s 519-969-5210 phone numbers – claimed to be a police officer.

According to police, the scammers are male or male with various accents and they are trying to get personal information from the person they are going to call.

They used various programs, including telling them that they were victims of identity theft, whose phone numbers had been prosecuted to register for purchases or were linked to Chinese crimes.

Police said the scammers may know the first and last name of the person they are calling, their address, email address or relative’s name. They can also provide virtual badge numbers and report/event numbers.

Lasalle officials said officials would never convey identity theft in this way.

Police advise that if you receive a similar call, please do not post any personal information. Hang up the phone immediately.

Police said there was no need to notify the service because they have not yet accepted the report. However, if personal information is misdisclosed to the fraudster caller, the police recommend calling 519-969-5210, Ext. 0 is scheduled extensions to get help.
