Parents were warned not to supervise their children on the beach after police received ‘completely avoidable’ reports about missing children.
Families flocked to the beach over the weekend when the temperature reached 24c in some parts of the UK on Saturday. But a police unit in Lancashire asked parents to ‘do it safe’.
Fyllde police said officials had received ‘various reports on missing children’ over the past two days, ‘which used a significant amount of police and coastal guards’.
The unit warned in a social media post that the beach was “a very dangerous place for children who are not supervised”, adding: “It is disappointing to see that young people are still allowed to approach the water that was not supervised.”
It is said: ‘It can be fatal, even for those who are competent swimmers. You also risk the lives of the coastal guards that would be deployed in a rescue situation.
“These incidents are completely avoidable and have a detrimental impact on the service we offer, such as when police officers are looking for lost children, we cannot handle or prevent crime.”
The unit urged parents to follow some ‘basic tips’, including that children never supervise “especially near the water”, and children are reminiscent of the basic principles of strange danger, and who to approach them as they need help.
It was added that parents should take a photo of children at the beginning of the day: “You have a clear picture of every child and their clothes” and asked parents to attach a wrist band to each child with the contact number of a parent, but no name.
It is also said that families should discuss a meeting point with all members of the group in the event that any person is lost.
