Judge temporarily restores funding for legal aid for migrant children

The Federal Judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration to reduce funding to the program, which provides the legal representation of tens of thousands of children without escort migrants.

In his decision on Tuesday night, US district judge Aracelli Martinez Olgin said that the groups sued the US Department of Health and Human Services in the abbreviations “have suffered almost unwavering financial impacts and thus shows sufficient display of specific and upcoming economic injuries.”

“The incompetent harm as a result of the defendants’ actions weighs in favor of the provisional blast compensation,” Judge Olgin said.

Judge Olgin said that the termination of government funding to directly legal representation directly hinders the mission of the groups, “impede their ability to provide the direct legal representation of unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings.”

“The court further establishes that the continued financing of a legal representation for unaccompanied children encourages effectiveness and justice within the immigration system,” the judge said.

Last week, the groups that collectively received more than $ 200 million federal grants were said that the program contract was partially terminated, terminating funding for legal representation and for recruitment of migrant children in immigration proceedings.

26,000 migrants are currently legal representation through funding.

Michael Lukens, CEO of AMICA Center, which is a migrant children in the Washington region, Colombia, called the ruling “victory” for defenders who work with unaccompanied children every day.

“Although we admit that this is the first step in this battle, we are grateful to see that the courts acknowledge the huge damage that the government’s decision to annul this funding means for children and our organizations,” Lukens said. “There should be no political division of children’s protection.”
