JD Vance told Denmark that during a visit to the area “did not do a good job” with Greenland – while President Donald Trump repeated his call that the US had taken over the island.

“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Mr Vvce said.
‘You have invested in the people of Greenland, and you invest in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful land mass filled with incredible people.
“We have to make sure America leads in the Arctic.”
Shortly before Mr. Vance spoke from Greenland on Friday, Mr. Trump His threats to take over the area continued, saying: ‘We need Greenland very important for international safety.
“We must have Greenland. It is not a matter of thinking that we can do without it – we cannot. “

The one -day visit to the US spatial outpost at Pituffik – located on the northwest of the area – has avoided violating possible diplomatic taboos from a state that sends a delegation to another country without an invitation.
The trip was scaled back after the residents became angry that the original itinerary was done without consulting it – especially in light of the repeated allegations of Mr. Trump that the US should control Greenland.
From the Mr. Vance spoke to soldiers on the US base, claiming that Denmark – and Europe for extension – did not protect the region.

He said: “This place, this basis, this environment, is less safe than it was 30-40 years ago, as some of our allies did not keep …
“Europe (did not) keep up … with military spending, and Denmark did not keep up to spend the necessary resources to keep this base, keep our troops, and in my opinion to keep the people of Greenland safe from many aggressive invasions of Russia, China and other countries.”
Mr Vance said that Mr. Trump “A President of Peace” was and added: “We respect the self -determination of Groenlanders, we believe in the self -determination of the population of Greenland.”
Asked whether plans were drawn up to use military power to take over Greenland, he indicated that the White House plans to wait for the people of the area to vote for self -determination before acting.
“What the president said … is that we should have a position in Greenland more,” he added.

Greenland is the world’s largest island, with a population of 57,000, and is also a founding member of NATO.
The island, which enters the Arctic Circle between the US, Russia and Europe, offers a unique geopolitical benefit that America has been in for more than 150 years.
Earlier this week Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was not surprised that the US wants control over Greenland, given his long -standing interest in the mineral -rich area.
“It may only look surprising at first glance and it would be wrong to believe that it is a kind of excessive talk through the current US administration,” Mr. Putin said.
