The retail took another big step forward in Dunedin in March 1985, when these peculiar stripes on most supermarket items first came into play.
It is claimed that the supermarket business will become more efficient and economical as a result.
The new South City Mall Supermarket is the first in Otago and Southland to make use of the stripes, becoming the 37th in New Zealand.
It is also claimed to be the soutiest user in the world.
Next week, The Gardens New World will become the 38th.
Stripes are an electronic code, known as barcode.
When passed through an electronic scanner, they display information on a computer in the store.
Willi van Horik passes products with barcode on the scanner.
