Campbell told 1News He was aware of historical allegations, but had no personal knowledge of the individuals involved.
It is estimated that the church has about 2500 members in New Zealand and thousands abroad.
The church is currently being investigated in New Zealand, Australia and the United States about abuse allegations.
Campbell told 1News The church is “a non-denominational Christian group just trying to live in the best possible way.”
“I have an association through my family. I have also been a scientist in the last 20 years, so I have a very wide socially liberal view,” he said 1News.
Police recently contacted current members and former member about alleged sexual offenses, and Campbell said this was the best place to deal with any concerns.
In a statement for the New Zealand Herald Last night, Campbell said the allegations of sexual abuse, or any other serious misconduct, should be thoroughly investigated and approached with full responsibility.
“My connection with the organization went through the family and, although it was informed of these historical allegations through the media, I have no personal knowledge of the individuals involved,” he said.
“My wife and I are non-denominations Christians, but my faith is separated from my role as a politician and I consider myself a social liberal. My views are shaped not only from my education but also from my scientific career.”
