Hungary will withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), an official said, as Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu visited the country despite a warrant for his arrest.
GERGY Gulyas, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s staff head, made the announcement just like the Israeli prime minister landed in Budapest on Thursday.
While the two leaders exchange greetings, Mr. Gulyas said the government would initiate the withdrawal procedure “to leave the ICC – which could last a year or more.
Later, Mr. Orban said at a news conference that the ICC is “no longer an impartial court, not a court of law, but a political court”.
“I am convinced that this otherwise important international judicial forum has been broken down into a political instrument, which we do not want to go with,” he added.

HungaryAs a signatory of the ICC’s foundations in Rome, the suspects should be arrested if they face a warrant if they lie on their land.
Warrants for the Arrest of Mr. Netanyahu and the former Minister of Israeli Defense Yoav Gallant was issued by the ICC in November.
The two are accused of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes as a result of Israel’s War in Gaza from October 8, 2023 to at least 20 May last year.
They both deny the charges, and the Israeli prime minister called the accusations a “shame” and “anti -Semitic”.

Mr Netanyahu spoke in Hungary on Thursday and Mr. Orban thanks for a ‘daring and principled decision’ and added: ‘The ICC directs its actions against us who wage a fair war with righteous means.’
ICC spokeswoman Fadi el Abdallah said the court “remembered that Hungary under a duty to work together” and Mr. Netanyahu arrested.
Hamas said Hungary’s actions are an ‘immoral attitude that shows collusion with a war criminal running away from justice’.
Hungary’s attitude comes after Donald Trump – Who Mr. Orban is often described as a cheerleader for – sanctioned the ICC in early Februaryand accuse it of “outdoor and unfounded actions directed at America and our close ally Israel”.
