The head of the Royal Navy returned from the track after an investigation into an alleged relationship with a female colleague was launched, according to a person familiar with the case.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Defense confirmed that Admiral Sir Ben Key had walked away from the first sea street and sent shock waves through the service.
But a spokesman at the time just said it was due to ‘private reasons’.
A spokesman updated this answer on Friday night to say: “An investigation is underway and it would be inappropriate to comment at the moment.”
The Sun and the Financial Times first reported the true reason behind its premature exit. Admiral key has always been due to the lead the fleet In the summer.
The FT quoted two people familiar with the case and said that the investigation was related to a relationship with a female subordinate.

The second Sea Lord-Vise Admiral Martin Connell temporarily took the lead in the service before announcing a full-time replacement.
General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, a Royal Marines officer who lost the national security advisor after last year’s election, is expected to become the next first sea.
If confirmed, he would be the first Royal Marine to be the head of the service.
Admiral key, appointed as first sea heil in 2021, placed a strong focus on eliminating unacceptable behavior in the fleet.
Last year he declared “zero tolerance for unacceptable behavior”.
In 2022 he said: “Those who do not want to serve in accordance with the values and living standards in the armed forces of the UK will be removed.
“There’s no place for you.”
Admiral Key joined the Navy in 1984 as a cadet and ordered two frigates, a minhunter and aircraft transfer HMS Illumnious.
The Navy mentions integrity as one of its six core values. It says: “Integrity is the quality of an individual’s character that encompasses honesty, sincerity, reliability and selflessness.
“This is an essential requirement of leadership and camaraderie. Unless we maintain our integrity, others will not rely on us and will suffer teamwork.”
Sky News approached Admiral Key via the Ministry of Defense for comment.
