A group that represents real estate investors expects the government’s new flat policy to provide a very necessary impulse to supply housing in New Zealand.

A planned change of law would allow homeowners to build grandmother’s apartments up to 70 square meters without the need for construction consent.

The owner of the property investor federation, Matt Ball, applauded the change, noting that many owners thought that existing rules are unnecessarily restrictive.

“Many of our members really want to develop and add houses or rooms to their properties, and it can be very slow to go through the consent processes of the board.

“That [policy] It creates a very simple way to increase housing supply, which is what we need so urgently in New Zealand. “

This hope was shared by Chris Penk, Minister of Construction and Construction.

“These changes are expected to see 13,000 more grandmother apartments built in the next decade – giving families more affordable and flexible housing options,” Penk said in a statement today.

Ball believed that politics would also benefit the renters.

“New Zealand is well known for not building enough houses and this initiative will help unlock the power of real estate investors to increase housing and rental supply,” he said.

“If you have a proper rental market for rent, where supply and demand are in balance, it means that prices are much more predictable and much more uniform.”

Renments, President United, Zac Thomas, also applauded the announcement, but said he did not compensate for other government policies.

“Facilitating the construction of grandma’s apartments is a step in the right direction, we support common sense movements to increase housing supply,” he said.

“But it’s a step ahead, two steps back when the same government brings back evictions without causes and makes it difficult to access emergency housing, forcing hundreds of Kiwis to live in cars and on the street.”
