Gore is mourning the loss of respected businessman Ivan Van de Water, who died in a plane crash near Hāwee Lake on Saturday, says Deputy Mayor Keith Hell.

Water’s van was one of two men aboard the light plane. The other person was taken to the hospital in a critical condition.

He retired to Wānaka after selling his jewelry business, Water Jewellers van in 2021, which he operated with his wife for almost 40 years.

Hell said Water’s Van’s death was a significant loss to the community, as he was an extremely respected entrepreneur.

“Most importantly, he was an extremely patient man involved in various community organizations and the community feels his loss,” he said.

“We sent our sincere sympathy to your family and also the best votes of the person in the hospital that survived the accident.”

The store, van of Water Jewellers, was a source of gifts for family and friends and promoted the main street of Gore as a good place to be, said Hell.

“The clock I use is one I received from Water Jewellers van many years ago, for example. Many people in the community have dealt with it over the years.”

A former jewelry team -member told Hell that he felt the loss and described Water’s van as “an amazing boss who took care of his team and also took care of customers.”

A Civil Aviation Authority -or -door said he was working with police to investigate the accident.

“Our investigators have traveled to Wānaka and the focus in the coming days will be to gather information that helps us understand what happened and why, determine any next steps,” said the -voice door.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.”
