A funeral was held for Antonine Maillet on Saturday, with songs and theatrical performances highlighting the lives of the famous Arcadia playwright and writer.
A house full of houses in Notre-Dame-Dame-De-l’Assamption Cathedral in Moncton, when people lined up two hours before Maillet’s ashes were taken into the historic church.
Including New Brunswick Prime Minister Susan Holt and Robert Gauvin, the former actor in the region, attended the event.
Maillet died on February 17 at the 95-year-old Montreal home.

Born in New Brunswick, she became the first Canadian writer to win the prestigious French Literature Award in 1979. Throughout her career, her work has been deeply inspired by the history, language, folklore and traditions of the Arcadia, with her name in over 20 novels and 12 dramas.
Her drama La Sagouine, first performed in 1971 as a role in Viola Léger, was a huge success, helping instill pride in Arcadia and contributing to cultural rejuvenation. Meanwhile, “Pélagie-La-Charette” is famous in France, selling more than one million copies.

“Many firsts illuminate Ms. Milt’s life. Among them, she was the first woman to serve as the Minister of Moncton,” said Lieutenant Colonel New Brunswick. Louise Imbeault added that she played the role of “all the beliefs and fanaticism she knew.”
“Ms. Maillet, as diverse as your role, pay tribute to you and thank you for it,” Imbeault said.
Singer Edith Butler, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to the concert, gave a touching account in a video during the ceremony.
“The last time I saw her was for her 95th birthday party… She stood up straight and talked for 20 minutes without making any mistakes. Her head was obvious and she was still a five-year-old girl.”
“Anthony, my teacher, my mentor, my friend, have a great journey,” Butler said, her voice cracking.
“Thank you for everything you did for Arcadia, I love you.”
