In Belgium, a fleeing jeweler was sought over an alleged fraud case of $ 1.8 billion.

Mehul Choksi is being sought over one of India’s largest bank fraud that took place seven years ago.

The alleged fraud has involved a single branch of Punjab National Bank, India’s second largest financier run by the state.

The bank has filed a criminal complaint with India’s federal investigation agency against various entities, including billionaire jewelier Nirav Modi and Choksi, his uncle and managing director of Gitanjali Gems GTGM.NS, in which they say they have cheated on PNB.

Police have filed charges of fraud against Choksi, Nirav Modi and others in connection with the alleged fraud.

The two diamond -tycoons denied any offense.

Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal told Reuters on Monday: ‘An appeal will be filed for his release on the grounds that he is
Cancer treatment undergoes and is not a flight risk. ‘

He said Choxi had not committed any offense in Belgium.

In a letter in 2018, Choksi said that the “investigative agencies with predetermined thoughts act and interfere with the course of justice”.

His lawyer told the local media on Monday that he would appeal to his release, referring to ill health and continued treatment for cancer.

Nirav Modi fled from India in 2018 before details of his alleged role in the case became public. He was arrested in the United Kingdom the following year and remains in British detention.

He grew up in the Belgium’s Diamond Police Hub, and Choksi regularly visited the city, even before the financial scam was discovered.

Diamond dealers in Mumbai said Antwerp would have been an ideal place for Choksi to resort, because he knew people there and remained attached to those in the business.
