
Kaitlyn Dalla Costa, a 20 -year media and diploma student in TAFE QueenslandHe scored a coveted place behind the camera in the 14th Australian and Television Academy Awards (AACTA) on the gold coast last February.
Kaitlyn captured moments on the red carpet, content behind the scene, exclusive panels and a performance by Paul Kelly, all as part of his role as voluntary cameraman.
Kaitlyn’s experience highlights how Tafe Queensland’s practical learning model prepares students for the real work of the industry.
As the film and media industries continue to grow, opportunities like this give emerging creatives one foot on the door. “When I discovered that I was selected to volunteer in the Aactas, I was really excited and honored to have been chosen from my class for this experience,” Kaitlyn said.
Studying at the Creative Campus of Coomera de Tafe Queensland gave Kaitlyn a basis in cinema and confidence to navigate a professional set set.
“Tafe Queensland helped me prepare for this experience showing me the foundations of the film industry,” he explained. “When I started, I had no idea how things worked. But after a year of studying and creating my own movie, now I feel safe to use a camera, configure shots and understand the label of a movie set.”

Kaitlyn filmed for five days, covering live performances, arrivals of red carpets and exclusive industry panels.

Tafe Queensland Coomera Campus offers practical training in more than seven creative disciplines, including films, music and graphic design.
Kaitlyn’s favorite moment came when he filmed the live presentation of Paul Kelly of How to make sauce.
“The most surreal moment was to capture Paul Kelly’s performance. Being so close to such an iconic artist … It is something that I will never forget,” he shared.
He also filmed sincere moments during the industry gala awards and rubbed his shoulders with big names like Shane Jacobson and Jake Ryan. “Something that really surprised me was how close I had to be for the actors and see them in the place.
It was great to be in the same building as Shane Jacobson, I will admit it, ”Kaitlyn added.
This experience marks an important step towards Kaitlyn’s dream of becoming a first deputy director.
She accredits teachers and the practical environment in Tafe Queensland for their progress. “If you are thinking of studying media in Tafe Queensland, do it! The freedom to create your own projects, the knowledgeable teachers and practical learning make everything worthwhile,” he said.
“Take advantage of every opportunity that comes to you. This is an industry you learn by doing, so the more you get, the more you will grow.”
With the connections made in the AACTAS and its growing skill portfolio, Kaitlyn plans to do a paid work in the film industry soon. “The connections I made and the experience I got will help me get a paid job soon,” he said.
