A French Court has banned the French leader of the extreme right Marine Le Pen to run in the 2027 presidential elections after it was convicted of embezzlement, in a seismic ruling that could feed global tensions due to judicial efforts to police policy.
The French Court ruling was a catastrophic setback for Le Pen, 56. The head of the National Rally Party (RN) is one of the most outstanding figures of the European extreme right, and a leader in the surveys for the 2027 contest of France.
The ruling could have high reach repercussions on French politics, turning the race to happen to President Emmanuel Macron and exert additional pressure on his weak minority government weakened after months of consecutive crises.
It is also likely that it exacerbates the growing world anger among right -wing leaders over the unique judges who end up their mandates.
In a television interview during the stellar schedule on TF1, Le Pen said he was innocent and would appeal as soon as possible against what he described as a politicized ruling aimed at blocking his presidential offer. The High Council of the Judicial of France expressed concern about what he called “virulent reactions” caused by the ruling.
“The statements of political leaders about the merits of the Prosecutor’s Office or the conviction, particularly during deliberations, cannot be accepted in a democratic society,” he said in a statement.
Le Pen has run three times for the president and had said that 2027 would be his last career for the Superior Office. Their hopes are now to revoke Monday’s decision in the appeal before the elections. Appeals in France can take months or even years.
