Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford is defending his former campaign manager’s criticism of conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and told reporters “Sometimes the truth hurts.”
Ford’s former campaign manager Kory Teneycke has been a vocal critic of the federal conservative movement, suggesting it was a disaster leadership and the urgent need to check its strategy.
Asked Monday about Teneycke’s comments, Ford suggested that Poilievre’s campaign might be a wise choice.
“From the first day, I’ve said his nails are strong, but he’s the best campaign manager in the country. Frankly, if Kory had this campaign, I don’t think Mr. Poilievre would be where he is now,” Ford said.
“There’s still a lot of time. We still have debate. At the end of the day, people will decide how they want the country to move forward. But sometimes the truth is painful.”
Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford said in Toronto on Monday that if outspoken strategist Kory Teneycke is running a campaign for federal Conservative leaders, Pierre Poilievre would not be in his position now. But Ford added, “a lot of time left.”
Poilievre’s chief strategist is Jenni Byrne, who Teneycke worked with Stephen Harper during his 2015 campaign.
The latest update to the CBC’s poll tracker shows that the Liberals are now most likely to form a government, which shows that Mark Carney’s Liberals are leading by 7 points among conservatives nationwide.
CBC News has contacted the Federal Conservative Party to comment on Ford’s speech.
Asked about the decline in his poll numbers, Poilievre had previously said Canadians would make a decision on the polling day.
