Michael Tanzi, a prisoner in Florida Death Row who once branded a ‘new serial killer’, was executed for the brutal kidnapping and murder of a newspaper employee 24 years ago.
Officials announced the death of Tanzi shortly after 6pm ET, his scheduled performance time. He was executed via deadly injection in Florida Prison in Raiford and his death time was 6.12 hours.
Tanzi was the third person to kill Florida this year and the first of two US executions scheduled for this week. Mikal Mahdi will be executed in South Carolina on Friday.
Tanzi attorneys asked the US High Court last week for execution execution, arguing that the application of a deadly injection could lead to him to extreme pain due to his size of 380 pounds.

Tanzi (48), kidnapped and killed Miami Herald Employee Janet Acosta, 49, on April 25, 2000. He was charged with murdering the first grade and charged with car coat with a weapon, kidnapped to facilitate a crime with a weapon, armed robbery with a deadly weapon and two charges of sexual batteries with a deadly weapon.
She read in her car during a lunch in the Japanese gardens of Miami when Tanzi saw her.
He approached her and asked a cigarette. Tanzi waited a ride to Key West, 159 miles away, that she was distracted and started hitting her until he gained access to the vehicle and took off.
During the hours of trial, he tortured and raped her.
At one point he told the woman that if she made any sound, he would cut her from ear to ear with a razor.
The night, after arriving in the Florida Keys, Tanzi decided that he would get rid of Acosta because she was ‘getting in the way’.
“He also knew that he would get caught up quickly if he were to release her alive,” the records say.
He drove to an isolated area in Cudjoe Key and told Acosta he was going to kill her. He crossed a piece of rope and strangled her until she died. To suffocate the noise, he places tube strap on her mouth, nose and eyes. He then disposed of her body in an area where he thought she would get unnoticed.
Tanzi would later be recognized in audio and video police interviews.
The following days he used funds from her ATM account to buy, eat and visit with friends. Police eventually found him two days after the murder as soon as they started looking for Acosta’s car after a missing persons report.
When police approached him as he returned to the car, Tanzi reportedly said he “knew what it was about” and wanted to discuss “a bad thing he did.”
After his trial in 2003, a jury unanimously recommended a death sentence, and the presiding judge agreed.
Friends and family described Acosta as a bookworm that enjoyed traveling, hiking and outdoors USA today.
After Tanzi was sentenced to death, the woman’s sister, Julie Andrew, told the Herald Her family “wanted to see justice be done for my sister. And we wanted to make sure no one else went through what we went through.”
A few months before the Acosta murder, Tanzi also killed Caroline Holder in Brockton, Massachusetts.
