The father of a paramedic killed by Israel in Gaza told Sky News he would have been on the mission to save wounded colleagues, but was sick that day and therefore his son went instead.
“It was supposed to be me, you know. I was on duty that night but got sick and sent him in my place. ‘

“We need protection against the international community. We need protection for medical teams. We are medicine soldiers of duty, not armed fighters. We are doing humanitarian work. If I see someone who needs medical help, I am obliged to serve them,” he said.
The bodies of the Red Crescent and the United Nations workers went missing about eight days ago. Despite repeated requests to search for them, which were denied by the Israeli army (IDF), the UN eventually found 14 bodies buried in a mass grave. One is still missing.

The director of the Palestinian Red Halms in Gasa has accused Israel of killing the emergency workers. “We arrived at the scene of the crime to fetch the bodies and found that everyone was shot and buried directly in the upper part of their bodies,” said Dr. Bashir Murad said.

The bodies were found in sand in the south of the Gaza strip in what Jonathan Whittall, Gaza head of the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs, is called a ‘mass grave’, marked with the emergency light of a crushed ambulance.
Mr. Whittall posted photos and video of Red Crescent teams digging in the sand for the bodies and workers lying on the ground covered with plastic plates.

The Israeli Army (IDF) denied killing innocent medical workers, saying that Israeli forces set fire to suspicious vehicles traveling without coordination and in an active combat zone.
“The IDF did not attack randomly on March 23,” a spokesman claimed.
“On Sunday, several uncoordinated vehicles were identified that advanced to IDF troops without headlights or emergency signals. IDF troops then caught fire at the suspected vehicles.
“Earlier in the day, cars that did not belong to terrorists were coordinated and passed safely on the same route.”

More than 400 auxiliary workers have died since the beginning of the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza, according to the UN.
According to the UN, at least 1,060 healthcare workers have been killed in the 18 months since Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after Hamas fighters stormed southernly Israel on October 7, 2023.
The UN reduces its international staff in Gaza by a third due to safety issues.
