A former Tory -LP is among 15 people charged with offenses on bets placed on the timing of the 2024 general election, the gambling commission announced.
The scandal over the alleged placement of betting on the timing of Rishi Sunak’s surprise decision to mention the national mood earlier has engulfed the Conservative Party’s campaign last summer.
While metropolitan police abandoned his own investigation last August, saying that the pub for misconduct in public office had not been complied with, the gambling commission announced on Monday that it had brought charges against 15 individuals.
Among them, the former Parliamentary Private Secretary of Sunak, Craig Williams, was former Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire, who was charged with fraud under Article 42 of the Gambling Act 2005, which is a criminal offense.
Russell George, Montgomsyshire’s Tory Senedd member, was also charged, along with Laura Saunders, who was Tory candidate for Bristol North West during the election.
The other 12 people charged with fraud include a former police officer, the gambling commission said.
These are: Simon Chatfield, 51 years old, from Lower Bourne, Farnham; Amy Hind, 34, LoughTon; Anthony Hind, 36, also from LoughGton; former police officer Jeremy Hunt, 55, Horne; Thomas James, 38, Brecon; Charlotte Lang, 36, Brixton; Anthony Lee, 47, Bristol; Iain Makeepeace, 47, Newcastle; Nick Mason, 51, Milton on Stour; Paul Place, 53, Hammersmith; James Ward, 40, London; and Jacob Willmer (39), Richmond.
They will appear at Westminster Magistrate’s Court on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 10:00.
