A fire forced the evacuations in the coastal community of Mahia, and anyone who remains in the municipality is being warned to be ready to leave and alert others in the community.
Police said they were participating and helping with a small number of evacuations in the small community of Hawke Bay, and asked the public to stay away from the Maungawhio Drive area, while emergency services fought the fire.
The remaining residents are being instructed to close all doors and windows and be prepared to leave if necessary.
Firefighters from eight stations around Gisborne and Hawkes Bay are fighting the fire.
The fire and the emergency said the fire is an unknown size and is located near the Maungawhio Lagoon, near Mahia East Coast Road.
The energy was closed to the settlement of Mahia, as two helicopters fly to work on the content of the fire.
Fenz said the teams were focused on protecting seven houses on the way to the fire and managed to keep all buildings safe.
Traffic is being directed away from the peninsula and residents are being instructed to close doors and windows.
Police have asked residents to contact all vulnerable members of the community so that they know what is happening and are alert and ready.
