A businessman met thousands of images of children being sexually exploited, caressed his wife’s head in court and said, “I’m sorry, my dear” when he was taken to prison.
Ian George Henry Durbin, known as many as a “good and worker family man,” was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for possession of children’s exploitation material.
Durbin was found with 2077 unique files of sexual abuse and child exploration on five seized devices after a search at his family home in Nelson by the Department of Internal Affairs of the Digital Children’s Exploration team in August 2023.
Among the images found was his “dedicated interest” in a victim who appeared hundreds of 4 years of age to about 12 years. Other images and videos showed children aged 3 to 16 years.
While the children he saw on -line were direct victims of their offenses, their own children suffered immensely since the search for their family home, he heard the Nelson District Court.
They would also have to live with the consequences of their actions, said Durbin’s lawyer Michael Vesty.
“Children are having to deal with the consequences and are completely innocent,” he said.
According to the factual police summary, Durbin operates his own business, and his LinkedIn account stated that this was in the window cleaning trade.

Forensic analysis revealed children’s exploration material on two hard -touched computer discs, an external hard drive and two mobile phones.
The evidence of Durbin’s search for objectionable material were found in three more seized items, including another computer hard disk, a laptop hard disk and another cell phone.
Among the 2077 files were miniature and cache images, or replicas of smaller size than an original file, which meant the originals were already present on the device and viewed by the user.
Crown promoter Jackson Webber said that although Durbin had not distributed any of the material characteristics and aggravating was his interest in a particular child and his online engagement with people with similar ideas.
The summary said Durbin had a point -to -point file sharing software program to download the material.
The program researched other network -connected users that could be looking for content, which was shared directly among user private computers.
“This was a high level of engagement for a long time,” said Webber.

“I do not consider any alternative to prison to be appropriate,” she said.

Judge Rielly also acknowledged that the steps Durbin took to address his offensive behavior and discover the root cause, which led him to become more aware of the damage caused by on -line child sexual abuse.

The Conditional Freedom Board would determine its release date. Durbin’s arrest sentence meant that he was automatically recorded as a child sexual criminal.
Police said the demand for child sexual exploitation resulted in a continuous cycle of sexual abuse of existing victims and demand for new victims who carried the burden on the rest of their lives.
