US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order asking him to break down the country’s education department.
However, the department cannot be taken apart without a congressional act, which set it in 1979. Republicans said they would set a bill to achieve it.
Mr Trump has long promised to pull the agency apart and make it polluting and polluting liberal ideology. It was a long -standing target of conservatives.
The order would almost leave the school policy in the hands of states and local boards, a prospect that pleads with liberal education.
The president has blamed the department for America’s academic performance and said states will do a better job.
“We are not doing well,” Trump said in the White House.
The White House said the department would not close entirely and retained its responsibilities for low-income school financing and distributed money for children with disabilities.
The White House said earlier Thursday that the department would continue to run federal student loans, but the order seems to say the contrary.
The department’s workforce has already been cut off in half, and there is deeply cut to the Office for Civil Rights and the Institute of Education Sciences, which collects information on US academic progress.
Much of the work of the agency is about managing money – both its extensive student loan portfolio and a variety of colleges and school districts, such as school meals and support for homeless students. The agency is also the key to overseeing civil rights.

States and districts already control local schools, including the curriculum, but some conservatives have led to cut strings affiliated with federal money and provide it to states as ‘block allowances’ that must be used at his discretion.

Public schools advocates said the elimination of the Department of Children will leave behind in a fundamentally uneven US education system.
“This is a dark day for the millions of American children who depend on federal financing for quality education, including those in poor and rural communities with parents who voted for Trump,” said NAACP president Derrick Johnson.
Democrats said the order will be fought in the courts and in the congress.
