An independent candidate hopes to make electoral history demolishing a federal opposition leader for the first time.
A huge task advances Ellie Smith before federal elections on May 3.
But it is being supported against the leader of the “Divisive” coalition, Peter Dutton, at the southeast headquarters of Queensland of Dickson.
“This is our opportunity … to make history in Australia and Dickson,” Smith told AAP.
“It is a great task to highlight an acting opposition leader.
“But his approach is to become Prime Minister and our approach is to have a local parliamentarian who represents our local community.”
Dutton has held the position since November 2001, denying Ali France of Labor in the two previous federal elections.
“Our MP is very divisive and chooses problems that talking could get a headline,” said Smith about Dutton.
“Those are not necessarily the things that people speak to me when I go out the door calling and talking to them about what motivates them and what they face.”
The opposition leader enjoyed 42.1 percent of the votes of the first preference in the federal elections of 2022 after celebrating 45.93 percent in 2019.
However, the Liberal National Party had a 1.7 percent margin in Dickson after the 2022 survey, which makes it the most adjusted seat in Queensland.
The most recent Survey of Yougov indicates that the coalition will retain Dickson under the preferred vote of two parts of 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent of the Laborists.
The main vote of the coalition is expected to be 39.7 percent compared to 28.8 percent of the Labor, regardless of 7.8 percent.
But Paul Smith of Yougov said work can be an opportunity to win Dickson, saying: “We are living in very volatile times.”
“We are in a choice in which there are more seats at stake than any other choice in the past years.”
Mrs. Smith ruled out any preference agreement, saying that it would be “genuinely independent.”
The former environmental consultant has called Dickson’s house for the last eight years, pushing the independent candidacy in 2024.
“Dickson is a broader cross -section of Australia and I think it shows in surveys that its popularity (of Mr. Dutton) goes up and down,” he said.
“What I love about Dickson is that any problem you face in Australian politics, you will see a microcosm here.”
The cost of living, transport and housing are the problems of the big tickets for the electorate that includes residents of the entire socio -economic spectrum, said Smith.
“Our community is very strong and motivated, and it is surprising how many people have left the carpentry to volunteer almost every day, if not every week, so that this happens,” he said.
“I’m doing it for them.”
