Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has criticized the Trump administration’s approach to Denmark and Greenland, with his ‘tone’, while emphasizing Denmark’s commitment to Arctic safety and cooperation with the US.
Rasmussen’s remarks, shared in a social media video, followed US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Greenland, a strategically important island.
“Many accusations and many allegations have been made. And of course we are open to criticism,” Mr. Rasmussen said in English.
“But let me be completely honest: we don’t appreciate the tone in which it is delivered. This is not how you talk to your close allies.
“And I still regard Denmark and the United States as allies.”
Mr. Vance said on Friday that Denmark had “underbelly” in Greenland’s safety and demanded that Denmark change his approach as President Donald Trump takes over the Danish area.
Mr. Vance visited US troops on Pituffik spacecraft at mineral rich greenland with his wife and other senior US officials for a trip that was eventually scaled back to a riot among Groenlanders and Danes who was not consulted on the original travel plan.
“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Mr. Vance Friday said.
‘You have invested in the people of Greenland, and you invest in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful land mass filled with incredible people.
“That should change.”
Mr Vance said the US has “no option”, but to take a significant position to ensure the safety of Greenland, while encouraging a pressure in Greenland for independence from Denmark.
“I think they will eventually work with the United States,” Mr. Vance said.
“We can make them much safer.
“We can do a lot more protection.
“And I think they will do much better too.”
The reaction by members of the Parliament of Greenland and residents has unlikely, with anger broke out over the Trump administration’s efforts to annex the vast Arctic island.
The Danish Prime Minister with Frederiksen has the allegation of Mr. Vance that Denmark does not do enough for defense in the Arctic, and her country calls “a good and strong ally”.
And Greenland politicians agreed on Thursday to form a new government, which stands together to the Mr. To resist Trump’s Overture.
Four of the five parties elected earlier this month in the Parliament of Greenland have agreed to form a coalition that will have 23 of 31 seats in the legislature.
Mr. Lokke Rasmussen, in his video, reminded viewers of the 1951 defense agreement between Denmark and the United States.
Since 1945, the US military presence in Greenland has decreased from thousands of soldiers over 17 bases and installations on the island, he said, to the remote Pituffik spatial base in the northwest with about 200 soldiers today.
The 1951 agreement “provides ample opportunity for the United States to have a much stronger military presence in Greenland”, the Foreign Minister said.
“If that’s what you want, let’s discuss it.”
Mr. Lokke Rasmussen added that Denmark increased its own investment in Arctic defense.
In January, Denmark announced 14.6 billion Danish Kroner ($ 2.1 billion) to financial obligations for Arctic Security covering three new naval vessels, long -distance drones and satellites.
