Parts of the South Island were offline after rodents chewed a fiber cable near Dunedin.
A contractor also cut the secondary cable in the area between Gore and Balclutha.
Hundreds of people reported interruptions on the internet or telephone in Southland and Otago.
The Downdector Sites found peaks in Internet interruption reports in a New Zealand, Spark, 2 degrees and slingshop shortly after 10am.
A New Zealand said engineers were working to restore the internet and mobile service in Dunedin.
“This is due to two isolated incidents in which the fiber cables in the area were accidentally cut by third parties,” the company said.
“Elegable mobile customers will still be able to send text messages using our satellite txt service.”
A New Zealand expected to restore the internet soon.
The contact energy site said it was aware of the interruptions and their technical teams were working to solve this as a priority.
Meanwhile, the company said people should not disconnect, disconnect or redefine their modem.
