Chiefs knocked down the Queensland Reds in first place with 27-15 in Hamilton on Friday and now has 26 points in their seven matches, with the Crusaders in 24 points and Reds third in 23.
The Crusaders were trying to recover from a 45-29 defeat to Moana Pasifika last week and scored five attempts.
Defender Will Jordan was a sublime in the attack, with three scoring assists, while visitors took a 31-0 advantage on Saturday, before two attempts in the last quarter for the home team to give a little life in the contest.
“In the fashion typical of Drua, they never say never and stayed there until the end. I am really proud of the boys with the way we started and built a little impulse in that first half and supported at the end,” said Captain Codie Taylor of the Crusaders.
“We were quite embarrassed last week and really questioned our mindset.”
Two attempts in the final 10 minutes guaranteed the chiefs a home win against Reds in a contest closer than the score suggests.
Samisoni Taukei’Aho and Xavier Roe crossed to obtain scores, as the incessant pressure of the bosses and the Reds barely disciplined the contest after the teams were level at 10 to 10 in the interval.
Meanwhile, Blues won a second victory of the season by beating the hurricanes 19 to 18 at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday night.
An attempt by Prop Marcel Renata and 14 points from the first five eighth Beauden Barrett boot sealed the victory, ending a series of defeats of three games.
“The way we land, we can be proud of how we played, especially in front. We have been challenged in the last five weeks in this area so that we can be proud of this victory,” said Blues captain Patrick tuipulotu.
Moana Pasifika recovered from a 14-point deficit to defeat the New South Wales Waratahs, 45-28, thanks to a hat-trick of attempts from Prop Feleti Sae-Ta’ufo’ou.
This is the first time Moana Pasifika has won two games in a row since the entry into the competition in 2022 and is her third succession victory against the Waratahs.
“I’m screwed. We left everything out there, I’m very proud of the men on our team to highlight it and to get the dub, to get consecutive wins,” said Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea.
Western force marked five attempts when they returned from a 13 -point deficit to defeat the Highlanders 29-20 in Perth.
“It looks very good, we got back to our processes (after delaying). We were disappointed with the first half, but we fought back,” said Force Scrumhhhh Nic White.
The victory moves the strength for fourth place in the table with 20 points, although they played eight games and have a bye next week.
