Cory Booker makes history in the US Senate: Why he spoke for 25 hours straight

Senator Cory Booker made history during the night when he spoke on the floor of the United States Senate for a 25 -hour record of 25 hours in a row to protest the presidency of Donald Trump.
Since assuming the position, Trump has challenged constitutional norms by ignoring Congress, challenging judicial orders and unilaterally implementing a series of policies, above all, from immigration to foreign policy.

The New Jersey senator accused Trump of showing a “total contempt for the rule of law, the constitution of the United States and the needs of the US people” in their marathon speech and said that the administration’s policies had “inflicted damage” to the public.

A record speech

Long speeches are often used in the United States Senate to block legislation or confirmation of government officials, however, in the case of Booker, tactics was used only as a form of protest.
The camera rules stipulate that to hold the floor, the speaker must remain standing and speak more or less continuously. To achieve this, Booker took away his chair and asked his companions intermittently, which is the only way a senator can take a break from speaking without losing his position.

The previous registration had been established in 1957 by the segregationist Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who had taken the podium for 24 hours and 18 minutes at that time to oppose the Civil Rights Law, which aimed to protect the voting rights of African Americans.

What did Booker say?

“I get up tonight because our nation is in crisis,” he said in part.
“Base commitments are breaking. Unnecessary difficulties are in charge of Americans of all origins. Our institutions are being attacked and even unconstitutionally destroyed and even shattered.
“In just 71 days, the president has inflicted damage after damage to the safety of Americans; financial stability; the foundations of our democracy; and any sense of common decency.

“These are not normal times in our nation.”

What has been the answer?

Tens of thousands of people around the world tune in the live transmission of YouTube to see speaking at various points.
His Democratic colleagues also aligned behind him to show support.
“I thank the Knights for their strength, their strength and the crystalline brilliance with which they have shown the American people the enormous dangers that face them with this Trump-Doge-Musk administration,” said the leader of the Senate minority Chuck Schumer, when asked about Booker’s efforts.
