The previous registration had been established in 1957 by the segregationist Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who had taken the podium for 24 hours and 18 minutes at that time to oppose the Civil Rights Law, which aimed to protect the voting rights of African Americans.

“I get up tonight because our nation is in crisis,” he said in part.
“Base commitments are breaking. Unnecessary difficulties are in charge of Americans of all origins. Our institutions are being attacked and even unconstitutionally destroyed and even shattered.
“In just 71 days, the president has inflicted damage after damage to the safety of Americans; financial stability; the foundations of our democracy; and any sense of common decency.
“These are not normal times in our nation.”
