COry Booker tells a story about the late civil rights leader, John Lewis, and forgiveness, while entering the 19th minute and 24th hour of a historic speech on Tuesday night.
At that moment, New Jersey’s first black senator broke a record for the longest speech ever delivered in Congress, set up by the South Carolina Segasie Strom Thurmond 67 years ago, which spoke a day and a night as opposed to the Civil Rights Act.
He fell over with emotion and looked at the ceiling and touched his heart when the room applauded his effort.
“Okay, I want to pass a little and then I go some of the biological emergencies I feel,” he said.
Booker, an avid 55-year-old senator who ran as president in 2020, pulled out of the policies of Donald Trump during his marathon speech against the lessons of civil rights leaders.
“I don’t know what John Lewis would say … but John Lewis would say something, he would do something. He wouldn’t treat this moral moment as it was normal, ‘Booker said.
Booker started his speech in the Senate Chamber at 19:00 and promised to speak “as long as I am physically capable” to protest the policy of Donald Trump’s unprecedented second term.
In what he described as “the moral moment of America”, Booker criticized the Trump administration for “complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution and the needs of the American people.”
“I get up tonight because I sincerely believe that our country is in crisis,” he said. “I believe that not in a partisan sense, because so many people who reach out to my office in fear, in fear, show up their lives – so many of them identify themselves as Republicans.”
Booker was still there on Tuesday morning, looked tired and wired, but was still busy with his suit and black tie and walked around the podium with his glasses in his hand.
“I have fuel in the tank man,” he insists, about 15 hours inside.
In his extensive but targeted speech, the senator painted a picture of an administration that was corrupt, venal and chaotic. Facts and figures of binders prepared by his staff, separated by the issue, laid in Trump’s close advisor and technical billionaire Elon Musk, and the ‘oligarchy’ that surrounded Trump, and warned against the cutting of Social Security and Medicaid that would hit the country’s poorest.
“This is the people’s house. This is one of the Constitution, and it is under assault! ” He said in the 14th hour with an increased voice and explained what motivated him to take his extraordinary action.
“Our spending powers, our budget powers, the power to establish agencies such as the Department of Education and USAID, it is under assault by a president who does not respect this document,” he continued.
He read poetry, Bible verses, cited song lyrics and senators and generals to hold control of the floor. He drew from speeches through iconic American figures such as Harriet Tubman, John McCain and John Lewis. The longer he continued, the more alliterative he became.
Booker reads personal stories of people affected by Trump’s policy – including a long version by a Canadian woman who was detained by immigration authorities for 12 days. His voice occasionally broke as he read the stories of hardship.
“These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such,” he said.
Booker, who produced a short -lived run for president in 2020, did not leave the room, not even for a bathroom break. His only respect of speaking was to hear questions about fellow Democrats, who were set up to support Booker’s protest and to join Trump’s condemnation.
Chuck Schumer, the top senior democrat, was among them.
“Your strength, your strength, your clarity, was just nothing less, and the whole of America pay attention to what you say,” he told Booker.
Although not technically a filibuster – a form of protest march in which a legislature holds the floor of the legislative room to delay a vote, Booker’s speech disrupted the work of the Senate, which was due to the afternoon.
His protest march was a sign of desperation and a call to weapon.
Seventy-one days in Trump’s second term, the Democratic Party struggled to find a general or coherent response to his agenda. The party was overwhelmed by the greasy executive orders to dissolve government agencies and deport immigrants – still fighting for how they lost the last election.
The democratic base yells at its leaders to do something, anything, to put the brakes on the Trump administration’s policy, while becoming increasingly frustrated with the disconnection of his outdated leadership.
Some of the energy is aimed at Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who made their party’s leaders look impotent because they held big rallies across the country in protest of Trump.
At the same time, Trump faced little to no opposition to his own party because he tested the boundaries of the presidential power, which made Congress look more irrelevant and powerless than in decades.
It was perhaps in mind that Booker, a well -known admirer of the Senate process, chose the room to make his position. But He did so with the recognition of its boundaries.
“How do we stop them? I am sorry to say that we hold powerful positions. We are elected by big states, but we are in the minority now, ‘he said. “It will take three people from conscience aside,” he added, pointing to the Republican side of the room to emphasize the control of the IDP.
Booker repeatedly called up the Constitution as he stepped against Trump, and sometimes called on the president’s own supporters.
“He promised to lower your grocery prices – they are higher. He promised to be a better steward of the economy – it is worse than he inherited. Over and over, he broke promises and made outrageous things like disappearing people from the American streets, and violating the fundamental principles of this document, ‘he said.
As he approached for 20 hours, Booker became emotional but enthusiastic when he called up protest movements of America’s past and asked for action.
“What do I want from my fellow Americans? Do better than I do, do better than us in this body. We are flawed and fail people, ‘he said.
“My voice is inadequate. My efforts today are insufficient to stop what they are trying to do. But we, the people, are powerful. We are strong. We have changed history. We bent the bow of the moral universe. And now it’s the moral moment again. ‘
