One person died and another remains in critical condition after the driver allegedly fled the police and fell at Great South RD in Penrose, just before 2 pm on Sunday.
A 22-year-old will appear at the Manukau District Court on Friday accused of recklessly driving, causing death and reckless direction, causing injuries.
The accident happened after a policeman saw a vehicle traveling in speeds along the Pressey Drive and signaled to the driver to stop.
They did not do this and supposedly fled.
Moments later, the vehicle crossed the central line and collided with two other vehicles near the intersection of Great South RD and sunset, police said.
A passenger from one of the affected vehicles died at the scene and the driver of the same vehicle was transported to the hospital, where they remain in a critical condition.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.
The driver of the vehicle at high speed was taken to the hospital in critical condition and remained there in a stable condition.
“We would like to recognize the impact yesterday’s events will have on the community and our thoughts are all involved,” said Detective Kevan Verry inspector.
“We are providing support to affected and their families, as well as our team that has been impacted.”
Police will not be launching more details about people who died until the family was notified, Verry added.
Verry said there were now several ongoing investigations, including critical incident investigation and policy, practices and procedures investigation.
The independent police conduct (IPCA) authority was also notified.
A scene exam was completed on Sunday and the serious accident unit and employees were working to establish the complete circumstances around the accident, Verry said.
Police were appealing to any witnesses who may have seen Gray Holden Commodore in the areas of Panama RD, Great South RD and Vessey Drive between 1:30 pm to 2 pm on Sunday.
