Ottawa – The Conservatives dropped the second candidate in less than 24 hours.
Stefan Marquis wrote in a publication on X that a Conservative official in Quebec told him that he would no longer represent them in Sainte-Marie, a Montreal ride held by former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault since 2019.
The Marquis said he said on a phone call that he said it lasted less than a minute and people in the party decided to use him as a candidate due to social media posts.

The Marquis criticized the decision, saying federal conservatives “choose a sudden cut to a devout ally willing to operate in a complex, proven political landscape.” He had previously served as a candidate on the same ride in the Quebec Conservative Party.
He wrote: “Posting a non-grounded tweet on X and expecting your natural allies to be excluded. This seems to be the way Canadian politics.”
Quick scans of his social media posts suggest that the Marquis will share positive posts about the Trump administration and the U.S. podcast Joe Rogan, while also frequently criticizing liberal Mark Carney, Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante and other progressives.

He also often peddled false information and conspiracy theories, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine being “inspired” by NATO’s expansion.
Conservative spokeswoman Audrey Lepage declined to explain the exact reason why the Marquis was eventually elected as a candidate in the second week of the campaign.

“He is no longer a candidate. We don’t need to add it,” she said.
Earlier Tuesday, the party released controversial comments from the podcast in February 2022, withdrawing Windsor-Tek Lakesh County candidate Mark McKenzie.
In that podcast, McKenzie expressed support for the death penalty, which seemed to include then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the list of those to be executed.
