A student at the University of Colombia, who is a co -founder, with Mahmoud Halil, a university organization called the Palestinian Student Union, was arrested on Monday by internal security agents of the Ministry of Homeland Security, his lawyer told ABC News.
Mohsen Mahdavi, a permanent resident of the United States, was arrested and detained after attending his interview with naturalization in Vermont.
US District Judge William Sessions subsequently granted Mahdavi’s lawyers with a temporary restraining order that prohibits the government from moving Mahdavi from Vermont County, “waiting for a more order” than the court.
At Colombian University, Mahdaui is “an outspoken critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and an activist and organizer in Student protests in the Campus of Colombia until March 2024, after which he took a step back and did not participate in organization,” according to a petition from Habeas received by ABC News.
Mahdavi’s lawyers called his arrest “illegal” and said he was breaking the first amendment.
“The illegal arrest and detention of G -N Mahdaui comes after the respondents accepted politics … to avenge and punish the unborn for their speech and expressive behavior related to Palestine and Israel,” the lawyers said.
Immigration and customs authorities spokesman forwarded ABC News to the State Department, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to his petition Habeas, Mahdavi was born and raised in a refugee camp on the west coast until 2014, when he moved to the United States. In the last 10 years he has been a legal resident and is expected to graduate from Colombia next month.
In December 2023, Mahdavi appeared on the television show “60 minutes”, where he shared this “as a child, he watched an Israeli soldier shooting and killing his best friend on the west coast,” the petition said.
“Mahdavi is afraid that if he loses his legitimate permanent status to resident and removed on the west coast, he will experience the same harassment, detention and torture that his family has experienced, and will be even more danger than the light of the campaigns who have directed him and spread him.”
Mahdaui’s attorneys believe that, like Halil, he is directed by the Trump administration under the Immigration and Nationality Act, Section 237 (((i)) (i), which claims that the Secretary of State may consider a person who has a reason to believe that there is a reason to believe that the present or the activities of the person may
In a court case in the Khalil DHS Immigration case, he presented a note on two pages by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, claiming that the law gives him the power to determine that a person is deportable, even if their actions are “otherwise legal.”
Rubio writes that Khalil must be deported because of his alleged role in “anti -Semitic protests and destructive activities that encourage a hostile environment for Jewish students in the United States.”

An immigration judge ruled on Friday that Halil could be deported on the basis of these grounds.
Halil, a green card holder and a permanent legal resident who is married to an American citizen, was arrested by immigration and customs application to his home in Colombia in March after helping to run protests in Colombia for the Gaza War. He participates in the negotiations with the school administrators requesting the institution to reduce ties with Israel and to be released from Israeli companies.
Halil graduated from his postgraduate training in Colombia in December and will be completed in the spring.
