A $ 3.5 million cleaning to contain a historical landfill is underway on a Bluff beach.
The Ministry of the Environment provided about $ 500,000 of contaminated locations and the vulnerable landfill fund, while the Conservation Department (DOC) and the City Council of Wancargill would pay the rest of the bill.
It is believed that waste came from an ex -heritage under the Old Ocean Beach freezing works, which were on site 100 years before being closed in 1991.
More than a ton of material had been removed since industrial waste, including asbestos, were first found on the beach in 2018, and part of the beach has been closed to the public ever since.
Doc Southland’s operating manager, John McCarrol, said that although the public is exposed to contaminants, there was still a risk, especially for the environment.
The waste would be excavated and classified, with a clean material to be used inside the site and the remainder removed and discarded in an authorized class A landfill, said McCarrol.
The advice and doc planned to use over 6000 tons of rock to build a 90 -meter long wall to avoid further erosion.
