Christchurch’s Orana Wildlife Park received the birth of two zebra.

Both are the first new foals in the park in over 30 years.

Exotic species manager Craig Gilchrist said the team was excited about the new children in the block.

“Herbie is almost four months old; he is sassy, full of personality and grows quickly,” said Gilchrist.

“The younger foal is only six weeks old, a little shy and still waiting for a name as we are still about confirming your sex.”

The new Mothers Asale, 15, and Eve, six, took some time to relate to their new babies.

Father Malawi, 13, needed a time limit while mothers settled, Gilchrist said.

“Malawi was a little noisy after the arrival of the foals, so we needed to separate him from mothers and bubs for some peace and quiet,” he said.

“Now the whole herd is back together and it’s time for our visitors to share magic.”

Visitors could now see the foals with the rest of the flock.
