Carney wants call with Trump, ‘respects’ his economic goals: Canadian envoy – National


Canadian ambassador to the United States said Prime Minister Mark Carney hopes to “convene a conversation with President Donald Trump as soon as possible.

In an interview with Fox News on Sunday morning, Ambassador Kirsten Hillman said the Canadian side had contacted the United States as Carney was sworn in as prime minister on Friday and was “looking forward” to establish connections with Trump.

She said Carney is seeking to “build a good and solid relationship” with the president, who “respects” what Trump wants to do in strengthening the U.S. economy, but noted that the prime minister wants to do the same for Canada.

Hillman avoided the question of whether she thinks Canada can do anything to avoid the reciprocity tariffs Trump will impose on other countries, noting last week’s meeting with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made it clear that Canada will be affected from April 2.

Carney will set out today for his first foreign trip to France and the United Kingdom, where he will talk about security, economy and trade relations, before stopping in Iqaluit, North Carolina, reaffirming Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.

Carney said he has no plans to visit the United States yet, but looks forward to talking to Trump at the right moment.
