A 15-year-old boy who tried to kill a teenage girl with a sword during a camping journey has been detained for 11 years.
The boy left the ‘innocent and helpless’ girl, who was 13 at the time, with life -threatening injuries to the ‘horrific and unthinkable’ attack in November, Humberside police said.
The power added that the girl, now 14, appeared on the side of the A63 near the Humber Bridge in Hessle, East Yorkshire, on November 1, 2024, with multiple injuries and asked for help from motorists.
She sustained serious injuries to her neck, abdomen, chest and back and was in hospital for three weeks.
The girl is still recovering from the ‘physical injuries’ and the ‘spiritual scars of that night’ and are ‘lucky to be alive’, said detective -superintendent Simon Vickers.
The senior detective, who led the investigation, added that the boy was going on the camping journey with “one intention”, and that was to “kill an innocent and helpless young girl”.
Rev. Vickers said the teens were part of a group that arranged to go camping before there was an argument.
He continued: “The teenage girl felt unwelcome and became uncomfortable and decided that she would leave. When one of the boys offered to walk her through the wooded environment.
“Her attacker then chased the couple and demanded that he walk with her, and the other teenager returned to the campsite.
“What the girl didn’t know was that he was planning to stab her.”
Rev. Vickers added that the girl saw the 15-year-old that a Katana, a Japanese sword with a curved, single edge, was pulling from the waistband of his pants after pretending to go to the toilet.
The girl then tried to flee to safety before the boy pushed her to the floor and stabbed her repeatedly, the senior detective said.
Officers later found the Katana back from one of the tents nearby where the girl was found.
Rev. Vickers said one of the girls on the camping journey took the sword from a family member’s knife collection and it was transferred around the group before the teenage boy used it in the attack.
The defendant, who cannot be mentioned because of his age, was convicted of attempted murder in March.
He was sentenced to 11 years of detention and handed an indefinite restriction order.
The defendant denied attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to serious bodily harm and possession of a bound article.

Humberside police said three teenage boys, 15, 16 and 17 years old, and a 14-year-old girl were subsequently released without charge in connection with the attack.
A 16-year-old girl, who cannot be mentioned because of her age, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and appeared at the Hull Youth Court in February.
She was sentenced to a nine -month reference order and ordered to pay a £ 111 fine, the power said.
After the boy was sentenced, Mr. Vickers said: “It was a camping journey that should have been a pleasant experience for everyone involved, and the events that unfolded that night, who had a young girl in a life -threatening condition, should never have happened.
“The boy went with one intention on that camping journey and it was to try to kill an innocent and helpless young girl, and because of him, she is happy to live to what I can only describe as a heinous and unthinkable attack.”
He added: “While the boy is now being punished for his unforgivable actions, there are no winners in this situation, with both teenagers’ lives now changing forever.
“Wearing any form of knife, whether you intend to use it or not, is never in order, and not something we as a police force will ever accept if we continue to do everything in our power to tackle knife crime about our area of power.”
