Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt and his wife Jessica have given fans nearly half a million reasons to love them – a number that will only grow.
In the past two seasons, Basicz has Jays Care Foundation’s RBI Summer Edition Program Chris’s court and team will win. Their contributions totaled $414,202 so far, and they brought the initiative back again this year.
“In the last year of his contract, we really wanted to see what we could do to make the most impact,” Jessica Bassitt told Citynews. “We really wanted to see if we could beat what we did in the past.”
In addition to their personal donations, the couple helped Blue Jays fans raise an additional $25,000.
Jessica added: “We really hope Jays fans can contribute again so we can send more kids into the program.”
According to Blue Jays, RBI Summer Edition is a free sports development program designed to complement summer schools while enhancing the physical and mental health of children in Toronto’s underresourced communities.
“It’s great. I think it’s a safe space for kids to let parents know that their kids are saying a lot in a good environment, especially the current situation of the world,” Jessica said. “It’s also great for kids to be able to get together, see familiar faces, play with friends and encourage being active.”
Fans will have the opportunity to bid for signature items in the game, as well as works from the Bassitt family’s personal collection. All proceeds from this auction will benefit the RBI Summer Edition program from April 28 to May 4. Then, from May 5 to May 22, Chris will serve as ambassador for the Special Jays Care 50/50 Homestand Jackpot, with all proceeds supporting Bassitt’s input and RBI Summer Edition program.
Jessica has been one of Chris’ biggest supporters for over a decade, standing by his side throughout his journey from minors to professionalism.
“Every game, I’m a nervous wreck,” Jessica admitted to Citynews when asked if it’s easier to watch Chris Pitch. “I told myself that if we ever had a World Series I would need some help (laughs). It could be a spring training game and I’m still talking to myself in my head and nervous about him.”
Did she watch Chris as Batman during spring training? That was the punishment he ended in the team’s fantasy football league with a record of 4-10.
She joked, “It’s fun! I’m really surprised that they found the helmet big enough to fit his head.”
