Twenty people were killed in a fire that broke out in an apartment for the elderly in a nursing home in China, the state media said today, while authorities arrested their owner while investigating the cause.

It was the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent years, including a hospital fire in the capital in 2023 that killed 26 patients and injured dozens.

Yesterday’s fire in the city of Chengde, in the province of Hebei, in the north, burning for two hours before being dodged, the official Xinhua news agency and the state supported by the state Global teams The newspaper said, citing local authorities.

State broadcaster CCTV said police arrested the owner of the apartment, while 19 residents of the house were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.

Experts are visiting the elderly home to check the cause, Xinhua added.

In January, eight people were killed and 15 injured in a fire market in Hebei, while a fire in a department store in Sichuan province in southwest Sichuan killed 16 people last year.
